Want to create furniture that you can't find in the Planner 5D catalog? You can combine existing objects with the Magic Cube tool to build your own unique furniture designs.
In this tutorial, we'll show you how to create two custom furniture pieces:
A console table with a decorative circular side panel.
A hanging wooden swing made from rounded slats.
Both designs use simple shapes and existing catalog objects that you can resize, reposition, and customize.
(Written instructions are below)
Before you start
Open your Planner 5D project and choose an empty area where you can assemble your furniture.
For both designs, we'll use the Magic Cube tool to create custom shapes.
To find it:
Switch to 2D mode.
Open Build → Forms.
Select the Magic Cube.
Place it in your project.
Select it to adjust its Width, Depth, Height, Levitation, and Angle.
You can also open the Materials menu using the paint roller icon to change an object's color or texture.
For more information, check out our How to Use the Magic Cube and Forms on Web article.
Method 1. Create a console table with a circular side panel
This technique allows you to create a modern console table with one rectangular support and one decorative rounded end.
We'll build the tabletop and straight support using Magic Cubes, then use a circular catalog object to complete the design.
Step 1. Create the tabletop
Switch to 2D mode.
Add a Magic Cube.
Resize it into a long, thin rectangular slab.
For example, you can start with:
Width: 180 cm
Depth: 40 cm
Height: 8 cm
Use Levitation to raise the tabletop to your preferred height.
For a table that is 90 cm tall, set its Levitation to approximately 82 cm, so the top surface reaches 90 cm.
Switch to 3D mode and check that the tabletop is horizontal.
Step 2. Create the rectangular support
Now let's add the support on one side of the table.
Add another Magic Cube.
Resize it into a tall, narrow panel.
For example:
Width: 8 cm
Depth: 40 cm
Height: 82 cm
Place it beneath one end of the tabletop.
Keep its bottom at floor level.
Align its upper edge with the underside of the tabletop.
Switch to 3D mode and make sure the tabletop and support connect without visible gaps.
Step 3. Add the circular side panel
Here's where we'll make the console look a little more interesting!
Instead of building a circle from scratch, you can reuse an existing round object from the catalog.
Open the Interior catalog or use Search.
Look for a round mirror or another suitable circular object.
Place it near the opposite end of your tabletop.
Rotate it if necessary so its circular face is visible from the front.
Resize it to create a decorative round side panel.
For example, you can start with:
Diameter: approximately 82 cm
Depth: approximately 5 cm
Position the circular object so its bottom sits on the floor and its upper edge meets the underside of the tabletop.
The goal is to make the circle look like part of the table's supporting structure.
Tip: Choose a catalog object with simple geometry and editable materials. Some mirrors or other decorative objects may not allow you to change every visible surface.
Step 4. Customize the materials
Once the table is assembled:
Select the tabletop.
Open the Materials menu.
Apply your preferred finish, such as wood or stone.
Apply a matching finish to the rectangular support.
Select the circular panel and customize its available material surfaces.
Switch to 3D mode and check the result from the front and side.
Tip: You can use Pick Texture to copy an existing object's material onto another compatible surface. Learn more in How to Copy a Texture from Another Object.
You now have a custom console table with a decorative circular end!
Method 2. Create a hanging wooden swing
Want to add a decorative hanging swing to your interior or outdoor space?
You can create one using rounded catalog objects, wooden materials, and thin Magic Cubes for the suspension details.
Step 1. Create the first wooden slat
We'll start with a rounded object that can be resized to look like a wooden slat.
Open the Interior catalog or use Search.
Search for a long, rounded object, such as a bolster cushion.
Place it in an empty area of your project.
Select it and adjust its dimensions.
For example:
Width: 200 cm
Depth: 16 cm
Height: 15 cm
Use Levitation to raise it to the intended swing seat height. You can start with approximately 50 cm.
Open the Materials menu and apply a wood-like finish.
Some objects may have several separately editable surfaces. Check that all visible parts have a matching finish before continuing.
Tip: If the selected catalog object cannot be resized or recolored as needed, try another rounded object or a suitable shape from Build → Forms.
Step 2. Build the swing seat
Now let's turn that first slat into a complete seat.
Select your finished slat.
Click Duplicate.
Move the copy directly beside the first slat.
Repeat until you've created the desired number of seat slats.
For example, you can use five slats to create the swing seat.
Keep their dimensions, height, and orientation consistent.
You can leave a small gap of approximately 1 cm between each slat to make the individual rounded pieces visible.
Switch to 3D mode and check that the slats form one even seating surface.
Step 3. Create the backrest
Once the seat is ready, let's add the backrest.
Select one of the finished slats and click Duplicate.
Move it to the rear edge of the seat.
Use Levitation to raise it above the seating surface.
Duplicate it to add additional horizontal backrest slats.
Adjust their heights to create consistent spacing.
For example, you can create three backrest slats at the following starting elevations:
First slat: 65 cm
Second slat: 82 cm
Third slat: 99 cm
These measurements work with the example seat height and can be adjusted to your design.
Keep all backrest slats parallel to the seat and check that they connect visually with the rest of the swing.
Step 4. Add the hanging supports
Now let's make the swing appear suspended.
Switch to 2D mode.
Add a Magic Cube.
Resize it into a long, thin vertical strip.
Apply a dark or rope-like material.
Position it near one end of the swing.
Use Levitation to adjust its height until it connects the swing to the intended overhead support.
Duplicate the strip for the remaining suspension points.
You can use four suspension strips, with two near the front and two near the back, depending on your design.
If you want additional details, add small decorative bands near the swing's attachment points using suitable catalog objects or thin Magic Cubes.
Tip: Check the suspension strips from several angles in 3D. Their upper ends should meet the overhead structure, and their lower ends should connect visually to the swing.
Step 5. Finish the swing
Once the main structure is ready:
Check that all wooden slats use a matching material.
Make sure the seat and backrest are correctly aligned.
Adjust the suspension strips if any appear to float or overlap the seat.
Add decorative cushions if desired.
Position the swing in your room, on a terrace, or in a garden setting.
Switch to 3D mode and inspect the finished furniture from the front, side, and above.
Important: This technique creates a visual hanging swing from separate objects. It doesn't create an animated swing or a functional suspension mechanism.
How to move multiple furniture pieces together
Because these custom designs are assembled from separate objects, you may want to reposition several pieces without changing their arrangement.
On Web:
Switch to 2D mode.
Hold Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) while clicking each object you want to select.
With the pieces selected, move them together to the desired location.
With the Group option you can keep the pieces together for easier editing.
If multiple selection isn't supported for the objects or platform you're using, move the pieces individually and check their alignment afterward.
For more information about object positioning and editing, see How to Edit an Object.
Check your finished furniture in 3D
Whichever furniture design you choose, inspect it carefully before using it in your final project.
Make sure that:
All pieces are correctly aligned.
The selected materials are consistent.
No objects float above the floor or intersect unintentionally.
The console's circular panel remains round and connects to the tabletop.
The swing's slats are evenly spaced.
The hanging supports visually connect to the swing and overhead structure.
If an object appears too high or too low, select it and adjust its Levitation or Above the floor setting.
You can also create a Draft render to check how the custom furniture looks with your room's materials and lighting.
For more information, see How to Create Renders on Web.
