How to Create a Mirrored Ceiling in Planner 5D

Want to add a unique decorative feature to your ceiling? In Planner 5D, you can create a mirrored ceiling effect by combining reflective objects from the catalog with custom ceiling panels made using the Magic Cube tool.

Whether you want a rectangular mirrored section above your dining table or a circular reflective feature in your living room, you can customize its size, shape, and surrounding materials to match your interior.

You can also follow along with our video tutorial or instructions below.

Step 1. Prepare your room

First, let's decide where your mirrored ceiling will go.

  1. Open your Planner 5D project and switch to 2D mode.

  2. Choose the area where you want to create the mirrored ceiling, such as above a dining table or seating area.

  3. Check the room dimensions and ceiling height.

  4. Decide whether you want a rectangular or circular mirrored section.

  5. If the default ceiling covers your planned design, select the room and hide its ceiling in the room settings.

Switch to 3D mode and check how much space is available above your furniture and lighting.

Tip: For a balanced appearance, try centering the mirrored section above a dining table, coffee table, or another main feature of the room.

Step 2. Choose a reflective object

To create the mirrored effect, we'll use an existing object from the Planner 5D catalog.

  1. Open the Interior catalog.

  2. Find an object with a reflective or mirror-like surface.

  3. Place it in an empty area of your project.

  4. Switch to 3D mode and inspect its material.

  5. Adjust its dimensions if the selected object supports resizing.

For a rectangular mirrored ceiling, choose a rectangular object. For a circular design, look for a round object with a suitable reflective surface.

Important: Not every glossy or metallic material creates a realistic mirror reflection. Check how the selected object looks in 3D before building the surrounding ceiling.

Step 3. Raise the reflective object to ceiling level

Now let's position the reflective surface above your room.

  1. Select the object.

  2. Use Levitation or Above the floor to raise it toward the ceiling.

  3. Switch to 3D mode and look at the object from below.

  4. If the reflective surface faces upward instead of downward, use 3-Axis Rotation, where supported, to turn the object.

  5. Adjust its elevation and rotation until the reflective surface faces the room and sits at your intended ceiling height.

For example, if your room has a 270 cm ceiling, you can position the visible reflective surface near that height, adjusting the object's elevation according to its dimensions.

Make sure any table legs, supports, or other unwanted parts don't extend into the room.

For detailed instructions on tilting and rotating objects, see How to Use 3-Axis Rotation.

Step 4. Create the surrounding ceiling with Magic Cubes

Once your reflective insert is positioned correctly, let's build the surrounding ceiling.

We'll use separate Magic Cubes to create ceiling panels while leaving the mirrored section uncovered.

Create your first ceiling panel

  1. Switch to 2D mode.

  2. Open Build → Forms and select Magic Cube.

  3. Place the cube in your project.

  4. Resize it into a wide, thin rectangular panel.

  5. Use Levitation to raise it to the intended ceiling level.

  6. Position it beside your reflective insert.

For example, you can start with a ceiling panel that's 5–10 cm thick and adjust its width and depth according to your room.

Switch to 3D mode and check that the visible underside of the panel aligns with the reflective surface.

Complete the ceiling

  1. Select the first panel and click Duplicate.

  2. Move the copy to another side of the reflective insert.

  3. Resize the panels as needed to cover the surrounding ceiling.

  4. Add smaller panels around the remaining edges.

  5. Leave the reflective surface completely visible from below.

For a rectangular mirrored section, you can use four panels arranged around the opening.

For a circular mirrored section, use several smaller panels to approximate the circular outline and check their arrangement from below.

Important: Magic Cubes are solid objects and don't automatically create openings. Build the ceiling from separate pieces around the reflective insert instead of placing one large panel across it.

Step 5. Customize the ceiling materials

Now let's give your ceiling a finished appearance.

  1. Select one of the Magic Cube ceiling panels.

  2. Open the Materials menu using the paint roller icon.

  3. Choose your preferred ceiling material, such as white plaster, stone, or wood.

  4. Apply the same material to the remaining panels.

  5. Check that all visible surfaces have a consistent finish.

For a modern look, you can combine white ceiling panels with a reflective central insert.

You can also use darker materials around the mirror to create a more dramatic effect.

Step 6. Add lighting and decorative details

Once the main ceiling is ready, you can add lighting to complement your mirrored feature.

  1. Open the Interior catalog and find a suitable lighting object.

  2. Choose pendant lights, ceiling lights, or another fixture that matches your design.

  3. Position the lights around or beneath the reflective section.

  4. Adjust their elevation so they hang at the intended height.

  5. Switch to 3D mode and make sure the lights don't intersect the ceiling panels.

For example, you can center a pendant light beneath a circular mirrored section or arrange several pendants above a dining table.

Step 7. Check your finished mirrored ceiling in 3D

Your custom mirrored ceiling is almost ready!

Switch to 3D mode and inspect the design from different angles.

Make sure that:

  • The reflective surface faces downward toward the room.

  • The mirrored insert is positioned at the intended height.

  • No unwanted parts of the original catalog object are visible.

  • The surrounding Magic Cube panels connect neatly.

  • The panels don't overlap or cover the reflective surface.

  • All ceiling materials are consistent.

  • Lighting fixtures are correctly positioned.

If an object appears to float, overlap, or disappear inside another surface, select it and adjust its Levitation, dimensions, or rotation.

For more information about resizing and positioning objects, see How to Edit an Object.

Step 8. Preview your mirrored ceiling with a render

Once you're happy with the design, create a render to check how the reflective material appears in the finished room.

  1. Switch to 3D mode.

  2. Position the camera so the mirrored ceiling is clearly visible.

  3. Open the Camera / Render menu.

  4. Choose Draft to preview the result.

  5. Check how the reflective surface appears with your room's lighting and materials.

  6. Adjust the design if needed.

  7. When you're satisfied, select your preferred render quality and create the final image.

By combining a suitable reflective catalog object with Magic Cube ceiling panels, you can experiment with different shapes, materials, and lighting arrangements to create a unique decorative feature for your interior.
