Creating a Built-In Shelves and Wardrobe

Even if you can't find the perfect furniture to add to your home design, you can always create your own!

In this tutorial, we'll explore three different furniture designs:

  1. Recessed wall shelves with decorative niches.

  2. A fitted wardrobe with a slatted front.

  3. A custom TV console with drawers and a wooden countertop.

You can follow any of these methods separately, depending on what you'd like to create.

(Written instructions are below)

Before you start

Open your Planner 5D project and choose the wall where you want to place your custom furniture.

Switch to 2D mode to check the available space and measure the wall's width. Make sure there are no doors, windows, or other objects in the way.

For these designs, we'll mainly use the Magic Cube tool, which allows you to create simple shapes and customize their dimensions, position, and materials.

To find it, open Build → Forms and select the Magic Cube.

For more information, see our How to Use the Magic Cube and Forms on Web article.

Method 1. Create recessed wall shelves

This technique allows you to create decorative shelving that appears to be built into the wall.

We'll use Magic Cubes to create the sides of the niches and add shelves between them.

Step 1. Create the wall sections

  1. Switch to 2D mode.

  2. Add a Magic Cube to your project.

  3. Resize it into a tall, narrow rectangular block.

For example:

  • Width: 50 cm

  • Depth: 20 cm

  • Height: 270 cm

  1. Position the cube against the wall.

  2. Duplicate it twice to create three matching blocks.

  3. Arrange the blocks in a row, leaving narrow gaps between them.

You can start with approximately 18–20 cm between the blocks and adjust the spacing to your design.

Apply a white wall material to all three blocks.

Switch to 3D mode and check that the gaps create the appearance of two vertical wall niches.

Step 2. Add the shelves

Now let's add the horizontal shelves between the wall sections.

  1. Add another Magic Cube.

  2. Resize it into a long, thin shelf.

For example:

  • Width: 100 cm

  • Depth: 20 cm

  • Height: 4 cm

  1. Use Levitation to raise the shelf to your preferred height. You can start with 106 cm.

  2. Position it horizontally across the two recesses, allowing the solid wall sections to conceal the overlapping parts.

  3. Duplicate the shelf and move the copies higher or lower to create additional levels.

For example, you can place three shelf levels at 50 cm, 106 cm, and 162 cm above the floor.

Keep all shelves the same depth and thickness for a consistent look.

Step 3. Customize the shelves

Once your shelving structure is ready:

  1. Open the Materials menu using the paint roller icon.

  2. Apply a contrasting wooden texture to the wall area behind the shelves.

  3. Keep the outer wall sections and shelf fronts white.

  4. Add small decorative objects, books, or plants to the shelves.

Switch to 3D mode and check that the shelves connect neatly to the wall sections without visible gaps.

Tip: Finish the size and material of your first shelf before duplicating it. This will save time and keep your shelving consistent.

Method 2. Create a fitted wardrobe with a slatted front

You can build a custom wardrobe using Magic Cubes for the frame and a decorative blind from the catalog to create a slatted door effect.

Step 1. Create the wardrobe base

  1. Switch to 2D mode.

  2. Add a Magic Cube.

  3. Resize it into a wide, flat rectangular base.

For example:

  • Width: 370 cm

  • Depth: 55 cm

  • Height: 10 cm

  1. Position it against the wall where you want your wardrobe.

  2. Make sure it sits at floor level.

Step 2. Add the top panel

  1. Select the base and click Duplicate.

  2. Move the copy upward using Levitation.

  3. Position it near the top of your planned wardrobe.

For example, you can raise the upper panel to 240 cm, creating a wardrobe approximately 250 cm tall when including the panel thickness.

Make sure the base and upper panel have matching widths and depths.

Step 3. Create the vertical frame

Now let's divide the wardrobe into sections.

  1. Add another Magic Cube.

  2. Resize it into a tall, thin vertical panel.

  3. Position it at one end of the wardrobe.

  4. Duplicate it to create the opposite side and internal dividers.

  5. Align the panels between the base and upper slab.

For a wardrobe with four sections, you can use five vertical panels: two outer sides and three internal dividers.

Start with a thickness of approximately 5 cm for each panel and adjust the spacing to fit your wardrobe.

Apply a white material to all the framing pieces.

Switch to 3D mode and check that the wardrobe frame looks even and fits beneath the ceiling.

Step 4. Create the slatted wardrobe front

Here's a creative way to give your wardrobe a unique appearance!

Instead of building each individual slat, you can use a window blind from the Planner 5D catalog.

  1. Open Interior → Decor → Curtains and blinds, or search for blinds.

  2. Choose a blind with narrow horizontal slats.

  3. Place it against the wardrobe front.

  4. Adjust its width and height to fit within the frame.

  5. Position it behind the white vertical dividers.

  6. Apply your preferred material or color.

If one blind doesn't cover the entire wardrobe, you can duplicate it and place additional sections beside or above it.

Make sure the slats are aligned and don't extend beyond the wardrobe frame.

Tip: Some catalog objects include additional parts, such as rails or supports. If these become visible, adjust their position so the wardrobe frame conceals them.

Step 5. Add handles

To finish the wardrobe, you can add small decorative handles.

  1. Open the catalog and choose a suitable small accessory.

  2. Resize it to create a handle or knob.

  3. Place it on one wardrobe section.

  4. Duplicate the handle for the remaining sections.

  5. Keep all handles at the same height.

You can also use small dark Magic Cubes if you prefer simple rectangular handles.

Switch to 3D mode and inspect the wardrobe from the front and both sides.

Important: This technique creates the visual appearance of a fitted wardrobe. The blinds and Magic Cubes don't automatically become functional wardrobe doors.

Method 3. Create a custom TV console

You can also combine existing furniture pieces with Magic Cubes to create a custom TV stand or media console.

In this example, we'll use two drawer cabinets, a central open unit, and a continuous wooden countertop.

Step 1. Place the drawer cabinets

  1. Open the furniture catalog and find a low chest of drawers.

  2. Place it against the wall where you want your TV console.

  3. Adjust its dimensions if necessary.

For example:

  • Width: 108 cm

  • Depth: 50 cm

  • Height: 75 cm

  1. Duplicate the chest of drawers.

  2. Move the copy to the opposite side, leaving space between the two cabinets.

Make sure both cabinets face the same direction and are positioned at the same height.

Step 2. Add the center section

  1. Open the furniture catalog and find an open TV stand or media cabinet.

  2. Place it between the two drawer units.

  3. Adjust its width to fill the available space.

  4. Align its front with the other cabinets.

You should now have three furniture sections arranged in one row.

Tip: If your cabinets have different heights, adjust their elevation so their upper surfaces line up before adding the countertop.

Step 3. Create the wooden countertop

Now let's connect everything with one continuous wooden surface.

  1. Switch to 2D mode.

  2. Add a Magic Cube.

  3. Resize it into a wide, shallow rectangular slab.

For example:

  • Width: 390 cm

  • Depth: 55 cm

  • Height: 5–9 cm

  1. Position the slab above the three cabinets.

  2. Use Levitation to raise it until its underside rests on the cabinet tops.

  3. Open the Materials menu and apply your preferred wooden texture.

Make sure the countertop extends slightly beyond the cabinets to create a small overhang.

Switch to 3D mode and check that the top connects to all three furniture sections without gaps.

Step 4. Add matching wooden side panels

To make the console look like one custom furniture piece, you can add matching wood panels at both ends.

  1. Add another Magic Cube.

  2. Resize it into a tall, narrow panel.

For example:

  • Width: 5 cm

  • Depth: 55 cm

  • Height: approximately 70 cm

  1. Place it at one end of the console, underneath the wooden countertop.

  2. Adjust its height so it connects the floor to the underside of the countertop.

  3. Apply the same wooden material.

  4. Duplicate the panel and place the copy on the opposite side.

Your TV console should now have a wooden surround that visually connects the top and sides.

Step 5. Finish the TV console

Once your furniture is assembled:

  1. Switch to 3D mode.

  2. Make sure the drawer cabinets and center unit are aligned.

  3. Check that the countertop rests correctly on the furniture.

  4. Confirm that the wooden side panels connect to the countertop.

  5. Adjust any pieces that overlap or leave visible gaps.

  6. Add a television and decorative accessories if desired.

Tip: You can select several objects at once by holding Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) while clicking each object. This makes it easier to move related pieces together while keeping their relative positions.

You now have a custom TV console made from several catalog objects and Magic Cubes!
