Whether you want a bathroom vanity with a built-in sink, a sideboard with decorative shelving, or a dresser with unique drawer fronts, you can customize the dimensions, materials, and arrangement to suit your space.
In this tutorial, we'll explore three different furniture designs:
A custom sink and bathroom vanity
A sideboard with open shelving
A dresser with decorative drawer fronts
You can follow any of these methods separately, depending on what you'd like to create.
You can also follow along with our video tutorial or instructions below.
Before you start
Open your Planner 5D project and choose an area where you want to place your custom furniture.
Switch to 2D mode and check the available width, depth, and height. Make sure there is enough space for the furniture without blocking doors, windows, or walkways.
For these designs, we'll use existing catalog objects together with Magic Cubes, which allow you to create rectangular panels, shelves, and other custom shapes.
To find the Magic Cube:
Open Build → Forms.
Select the Magic Cube.
Place it in your project.
Select it to adjust its Width, Depth, Height, Levitation, and Angle.
You can also use the paint roller icon to customize the object's materials and colors.
For more information, check out our How to Use the Magic Cube and Forms on Web article.
Tip: These custom furniture designs are assembled from separate objects. Finish the dimensions and materials of repeated pieces before duplicating them to make the process easier.
Method 1. Create a custom sink and bathroom vanity
Want a bathroom vanity that fits your space perfectly?
You can use an existing sink from the catalog and build a custom vanity around it using Magic Cubes.
Step 1. Add the sink
We'll start with a catalog sink so we can keep its original basin shape.
Open the Interior catalog and search for a sink.
Choose a suitable model and place it in your bathroom.
Adjust its dimensions if the selected object supports resizing.
Position the sink against your chosen wall.
Use Levitation or Above the floor to raise it to your preferred height.
Switch to 3D mode and check that the sink is correctly positioned.
Step 2. Create the vanity structure
Now let's build the cabinet beneath the sink.
Switch to 2D mode.
Add a Magic Cube.
Resize it into a tall, narrow panel.
Position it beneath one side of the sink.
Duplicate the panel and move the copy to the opposite side.
Add another Magic Cube to create a bottom shelf or cabinet base.
Adjust the dimensions until the panels form a consistent structure.
You can add a back panel or additional storage sections if desired.
Switch to 3D mode to check that the panels connect neatly and the sink appears supported by the vanity.
Step 3. Create the countertop
If your sink design requires a countertop, we'll build it using several separate Magic Cubes.
Add a Magic Cube.
Resize it into a wide, thin countertop section.
Position it beside the sink.
Duplicate and resize additional sections to cover the remaining vanity surfaces.
Add narrow strips in front of or behind the basin if needed.
Adjust all pieces to the same height.
Make sure the sink bowl remains completely visible.
Important: Magic Cubes are solid objects and don't automatically create openings. Build the countertop from separate pieces around the basin instead of covering it with one large cube.
Step 4. Finish the vanity
Once the structure is complete:
Apply your preferred material to the vanity panels.
Choose a matching or contrasting finish for the countertop.
Add drawers, shelves, or decorative accessories if desired.
Check that the sink and faucet remain visible and correctly positioned.
For example, you can combine a wooden vanity with a light stone countertop for a modern bathroom appearance.
You now have a custom sink and vanity!
Method 2. Create a sideboard with open shelving
This method allows you to combine a lower storage cabinet with open shelving above it.
It's a great option for living rooms, dining rooms, or kitchens where you want additional storage and display space.
Step 1. Create the sideboard base
Switch to 2D mode.
Open the Interior catalog and find a suitable cabinet or sideboard.
Place it against your chosen wall.
Adjust its dimensions and position if needed.
Alternatively, you can build a simple rectangular cabinet structure using Magic Cubes for the sides, bottom, top, and back.
Switch to 3D mode and check that the base fits your space.
Step 2. Create the upper shelving structure
Now let's add the open shelving above the sideboard.
Add a Magic Cube.
Resize it into a tall, narrow vertical panel.
Position it above one side of the sideboard.
Duplicate the panel and place the copy on the opposite side.
Adjust their height so both panels match.
Make sure the vertical panels are aligned with the lower cabinet.
Step 3. Add the shelves
Add another Magic Cube.
Resize it into a long, thin horizontal shelf.
Position it between the two vertical panels.
Use Levitation to raise it to your desired height.
Duplicate the shelf to create additional levels.
Adjust the spacing between the shelves.
Keep the shelves the same width and depth for a consistent appearance.
Step 4. Add a back panel and decorations
If you'd like your shelving to have a solid background:
Add a new Magic Cube.
Resize it into a wide, thin vertical panel.
Position it behind the shelves.
Adjust its dimensions to match the shelving structure.
Apply your preferred material.
You can also leave the back open for a lighter appearance.
Once the shelving is ready, add books, plants, dishes, or decorative accessories from the catalog.
Method 3. Create a dresser with custom drawer fronts
Want a dresser with a unique design?
You can use an existing dresser from the catalog and add decorative Magic Cube panels to customize its front.
Step 1. Add the dresser
Open the Interior catalog and search for a dresser or chest of drawers.
Choose a suitable model.
Place it against your desired wall.
Adjust its dimensions and position if those settings are available.
Switch to 3D mode to check how it fits the room.
Choose a simple dresser if you want more freedom to customize the front.
Step 2. Create the drawer fronts
Now let's add decorative panels to the dresser.
Switch to 2D mode.
Open Build → Forms and add a Magic Cube.
Resize it into a wide, thin rectangular panel.
Position it in front of one drawer.
Adjust its Width, Height, and Depth to match your intended drawer-front design.
Duplicate the panel for the remaining drawers.
Make sure the panels are evenly spaced and aligned.
You can use larger panels for a minimalist appearance or smaller sections to create a more detailed drawer layout.
Tip: Position the panels slightly in front of the existing dresser surface so they remain visible without unnecessarily protruding into the room.
Step 3. Add a custom dresser top
If you'd like a contrasting countertop:
Add another Magic Cube.
Resize it into a wide, thin horizontal slab.
Position it above the dresser.
Adjust its width and depth to create a small overhang.
Apply your preferred material.
For example, a wooden dresser with a light stone or marble top can create an elegant contrast.
Step 4. Add handles and finishes
To complete the dresser:
Open the catalog and find suitable handles or small decorative objects.
Position them on the drawer fronts.
Duplicate them for the remaining drawers.
Keep their size and elevation consistent.
Apply matching materials to the drawer-front panels.
Important: Magic Cube panels create the visual appearance of customized drawers. They don't automatically become functional drawers that can open or close.
How to customize materials across your furniture
Once you've created your furniture, you can use materials to make the separate parts look like one complete design.
Select a Magic Cube panel.
Open the Materials menu using the paint roller icon.
Choose a suitable finish, such as wood, stone, marble, or a solid color.
Apply the same finish to matching pieces.
Use a contrasting material for countertops, shelves, or decorative fronts.
You can also use Pick Texture to copy an existing material from another compatible object.
For more information, see How to Copy a Texture from Another Object.
Tip: If you're using wood or patterned materials, check the texture direction and scale so the different sections look consistent.
How to move multiple furniture pieces together
Because these designs use several separate objects, you may need to move multiple parts at once.
On Web:
Switch to 2D mode.
Hold Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) while clicking each object you want to select.
Move the selected objects together to your desired position.
If the Group option is available, you can use it to keep the pieces together for easier editing.
If multi-selection isn't supported for the selected items, move the pieces individually and check their alignment afterward.
For more information, see How to Edit an Object.
Check your finished furniture in 3D
Whichever design you choose, switch to 3D mode and inspect the result from different angles.
Make sure that:
All furniture panels and shelves are correctly aligned.
The sink basin remains visible and unobstructed.
The sideboard shelves connect neatly to the side panels.
The dresser drawer fronts are evenly spaced.
All materials match your intended design.
No objects float or overlap unintentionally.
The furniture doesn't intersect nearby walls or other objects.
If an object appears too high, too low, or disappears inside another surface, select it and adjust its Levitation, dimensions, or position.
For more information about resizing and positioning objects, see How to Edit an Object.
Once you're satisfied with your custom furniture, you can create a realistic render to see how it looks in your finished room.
For detailed instructions, see How to Create Renders on Web.
By combining catalog furniture with Magic Cubes, you can customize furniture dimensions, materials, and decorative details to create designs that perfectly suit your space.
