Using Moodboards (Web)
Updated over a week ago

A mood board is an indispensable tool for organizing ideas and design projects. It helps you visualize and execute your design dreams.

What is a mood board?

A mood board visually represents an interior design concept or idea. It is a collage of images, colours, textures, patterns, and materials that evoke a particular mood or atmosphere together. Think of it as a collage or a storyboard that captures the essence and feel of the design you want to achieve.

Mood boards are powerful communication tools between designers, clients, and other project stakeholders. They help translate abstract ideas into concrete visual language that everyone can understand and relate to.

The purpose of a mood board

You can think of a mood board as an overall roadmap of your project. These maps can be used to create the look and feel of a space or to offer a reference point for the details of the design. They are quicker to assemble, less expensive than mockups, and can easily adapt to any changes. Here is how a beautiful mood board can help you with your project:

  • Inspiration: Mood boards ignite inspiration and creativity, acting as a catalyst for your design process.

  • Visual communication: They visually communicate your ideas and design vision, avoiding misunderstandings with clients and collaborators.

  • Consistency: Mood boards help maintain consistency throughout the project, ensuring that all design elements harmonize effectively.

  • Sample testing: By bringing together various materials and colors on a mood board, you can gauge how they interact and complement each other.

  • Decision-making: When faced with multiple design options, a mood board can help you make well-informed decisions based on its overall aesthetic and mood.

Different types of mood boards

There are different types of mood boards, each serving a distinct purpose. Some common types include:

  • Style mood boards: Focusing on a particular style, such as minimalism, bohemian, or industrial, these mood boards explore the essence of the chosen theme.

  • Color palette mood boards: These boards revolve around color schemes, helping you visualize how different hues interact and influence the overall ambiance.

  • Material mood boards: Ideal for selecting and combining various materials like wood, metal, fabric, or stone.

  • Room-specific mood boards: Tailored for a specific room, such as the living room, bedroom, or kitchen, these boards capture the unique requirements of each space.

  • Seasonal mood boards: Inspired by seasonal elements, these boards convey the spirit of spring, summer, fall, or winter in your design.

How to create an effective mood board

Creating a mood board is an exciting and essential step in interior design. It lets you visually articulate your design concept and set the tone for your project. Follow these steps to craft an effective mood board to inspire and guide your design journey:

  1. Define your design concept: Determine the style, mood, and atmosphere you want to achieve. Collect ideas, inspiration, and reference images that resonate with your vision.

  2. Create a new board in your Planner 5D account: Navigate to My Projects -> Moodboards and select New Moodboard.

  3. Gather inspirational images: Utilize various sources, including interior design magazines, websites, and even your own photographs. Focus on visuals that evoke the emotions and aesthetics you want to convey in your design.

  4. Curate and organize: Select the most compelling visuals that best represent your design concept. Arrange them in a way that tells a story and elicits the intended mood.

  5. Incorporate a color palette: Choose colors that complement and enhance each other, reflecting the desired ambiance.

  6. Add texture and materials: Introduce textures and include samples or images of materials to highlight the tactile aspects of your design.

  7. Consider scale and proportion: Ensure that the images and materials you choose represent the actual size and quantity you intend to use in the design.

  8. Embrace white space: Don't overcrowd your mood board. Leave enough space to allow the chosen elements to breathe.

  9. Review and refine: Step back and review your mood board from a fresh perspective. Make any necessary adjustments or refinements to enhance its effectiveness.

  10. Present and share: you can use several options: share the link to the Moodboard or download it as PNF or PDF.

Moodboard features

  1. Create several pages to keep everything in one place for one project;

  2. In Settings, you can set the name for the moodboard and select if it should always show the grid and snap to it;

  3. At the bottom of the screen, you can insert an image, add a shape, draw or paste text, add a sticker, or use a highlighter to stress your ideas. We recommend combining ideas in frames to later be able to move those around as a group of objects. For the navigation, you can use the arrow or a hand.
