How to Create an L-Shaped House with Sloped Roofs

You can watch the video below or follow written instructions as well:

In Planner 5D, you can combine two rooms, add single-slope roofs, and use the Magic Cube tool to create custom walls that follow the roofline.

Step 1. Create the L-shaped layout

Let's start with the basic structure of your house.

  1. Open your project and switch to 2D mode.

  2. Add two rectangular rooms to your project.

  3. Arrange them at a 90-degree angle to create an L shape.

  4. Connect the rooms so there are no gaps or overlapping floor areas.

  5. Adjust the room dimensions to match your desired house layout.

For example, you can set the wall height to 270 cm and wall thickness to 10 cm for both rooms.

Make sure to leave enough space at the inside corner of the L shape if you want to place your main entrance there.

Tip: If the default flat ceilings interfere with your planned sloped roofs, select the rooms and hide their ceilings.

Step 2. Add the first sloped roof

Now let's cover the first part of your house with a roof.

  1. Open Construction → Roofs.

  2. Find a single-slope (shed) roof.

  3. Place it above the first room.

  4. Select the roof and adjust its dimensions.

For example, you can start with:

  • Width: 332 cm

  • Depth: 866 cm

  • Height: 163 cm

  • Levitation: 269 cm

These are example measurements, so adjust them according to your house.

Rotate the roof so its longer side follows the first wing of your house.

Switch to 3D mode and check that the lower edge of the roof sits near the top of the room walls.

Tip: The roof's Height setting adjusts the model's vertical dimensions as well as the angle.

Step 3. Add the second sloped roof

You don't need to create the second roof from scratch!

  1. Select the first roof and click Duplicate.

  2. Rotate the copy by 90 degrees in 2D.

  3. Move it above the second wing of the house.

  4. Adjust its dimensions to fit the second room.

  5. Make sure the two roofs meet neatly at the corner.

Switch to 3D and check how the two roof sections connect.

You should now have two perpendicular roof slopes following the L-shaped layout.

Tip: Before moving on, make sure both roofs are correctly positioned.

You can select both roofs by holding Shift and clicking each one. Use the Group option to keep them together. This makes it easier to move both roof sections aside while preserving their relative positions.

Step 4. Create the taller walls beneath the roofs

Because the roofs are sloped, one side of each room will need a taller wall to reach the roof.

You can create these additional wall sections using Magic Cubes.

Move the roofs aside at this point

To make editing the walls easier, temporarily move the roofs away from the house.

  1. Switch to 2D mode.

  2. Hold Shift and click both roofs to select them together.

  3. Choose Group from the selection menu.

  4. Move the selected roofs into an empty area beside the house, keeping their relative positions unchanged.

  5. Remember their original position so you can return them later.

Create the first wall extension

  1. Open Build → Forms and add a Magic Cube.

  2. Resize the cube into a long, thin wall panel.

For example:

  • Width: 857 cm

  • Depth: 10 cm

  • Height: 157 cm

  1. Position it along the top of the wall on the higher side of your roof.

  2. Use Levitation to raise it to approximately 270 cm, matching the height of the existing wall.

  3. Adjust its position and height so it connects the existing wall to the underside of the roof.

Temporarily move the roof back into position and check the result in 3D.

Create the second wall extension

Once your first wall extension is ready:

  1. Select it and click Duplicate.

  2. Rotate the copy to match the direction of the second wing.

  3. Adjust its length to fit the second room.

  4. Position it above the corresponding wall.

  5. Check that it reaches the underside of the second roof.

You now have the taller walls needed to support the visual appearance of your sloped roofs.

Tip: Apply the same wall material to the 'wall' Magic Cubes and the original walls so they look like one continuous surface.

Step 5. Fill the triangular gaps beneath the roof slopes

You may notice triangular or wedge-shaped gaps between the standard walls and the sloped roofs at the ends of your house.

  1. Switch to 2D mode.

  2. Open Build → Roofs and add find a triangular wall extension.

  3. Place it into the project and adjust the size to fill in the gap.

Tip: Check the wall panels from different angles in 3D to make sure there are no visible gaps or pieces sticking out through the roof.

Step 6. Put the roofs back in place

We've moved the roofs aside while working on the walls, it's time to return them to their original positions.

  1. Switch to 2D mode.

  2. Select both roofs together or select their group, if you've grouped them.

  3. Move them back over the house, keeping their relative positions unchanged.

  4. Check that the roof edges align with the house walls.

  5. Switch to 3D mode and inspect the connection between the roofs and your new wall panels.

Pay special attention to the inside corner where the two roof sections meet.

If you notice any remaining gaps, you can adjust the roof positions or use additional thin Magic Cubes to fill them.

Step 7. Customize your roof and wall materials

Now let's make your house look the way you want!

  1. Select the first roof and open the Materials menu using the paint roller icon.

  2. Choose your preferred roof texture, such as dark tiles or shingles.

  3. Apply the same material to the second roof.

  4. Select the house walls and apply your preferred wall finish.

  5. Apply the same finish to all the custom Magic Cube wall panels.

Tip: Adjust the texture scale so the roof materials look consistent on both sections.

Step 8. Check your finished house in 3D

Switch to 3D mode and take a look around the entire building.

Make sure that:

  • Both roofs correctly cover their rooms.

  • The roof sections meet without visible gaps.

  • The taller wall extensions connect to the roofs.

  • The sloped end panels fit beneath the rooflines.

  • All walls and roofs have consistent materials.

  • Doors and windows are positioned correctly.

If any elements appear to float, overlap, or extend through the roof, select them and adjust their dimensions, rotation, or Levitation.
